Edmonton, AB – The Edmonton Drillers are the 2008 Canadian Major Indoor Soccer League champions.
Edmonton scored an 8-7 victory over Calgary United FC at St. Albert’s Servus Place Friday night to win the CMISL Champions trophy and lay claim to the inaugural CMISL title.
The championship featured the CMISL’s top two seeds in a one-game, winner-take-all showdown.
Jarin Myskiw paced the Drillers attack with a hat trick, while Damir Jesic scored a pair of one-point goals for United FC.
The Drillers, who surrendered an own-goal in the second quarter, carried a lead of 3-2 into the locker room at half-time.
Myskiw’s third goal of the night gave Edmonton an 7-5 advantage midway through the third quarter. The Drillers Jordan Gillespie then hammered home what proved to the winning tally at 3:41 of the fourth.
Jesic and Kyle Yamada each rifled one-pointers past Edmonton netminder Tristan Ilko, who blocked 22 of 29 Calgary shots, to pare the Drillers lead to a single point.
Despite having over nine minutes to net the equalizer, United FC was unable to do so.
Edmonton and Calgary finished the 10-game regular season with identical 8-2 records and split their four-game head-to-head seasonal series two games apiece. United FC entered Friday’s championship game riding a three-game road win streak.
